Crisp February air welcomed 36 runners to the Daniel Webster statue on Thursday, as the CPTC members prepared for the 1K Special Workout (not to be confused with the Special K Diet). The workout consisted of three hard 1K efforts, followed by a reservoir loop of 10 lamppost pickups. Pre-workout buzz focused on Thom Little s really cool Skeletor gloves, which had to be seen to be believed. Andrea Costella led off the pre-workout announcements with a message on NYRR Club Night, which will once again be held on a Thursday. As Coach Tony will attend Club Night in lieu of the Thursday night workout, several club members have already expressed interest in being the honorary guest coach for the March 1st workout.
By 7:19, the first group headed out to run. By the end of the workout, it became clear to most runners that the toughest part of the workout was not the 1K intervals, but the 10 lamppost pickups afterward. Surprisingly, no one suggested that Tony should rename the workout to the 10 Lamppost Special . After returning to the statue, a few runners mentioned that they wanted a rare retro Orange CPTC jacket. Once Tony arrived back on the scene, the conversation switched to city running techniques. Specifically, he said that if you re running on the city streets and want your training partner to slow down, the worst thing you can do is yell or speed up to try to talk some sense into your running partner. Instead, you should come to a stop, and your partner will magically realize he or she needs to slow down. And on this bit of wisdom, everyone departed home.
