Down in Richmond last Sunday, Stacy Creamer placed third in her age division at the
Duathlon National Championships, thereby qualifying for the World Duathlon Championships this fall in Huntsville, NC. (Stacy is 49 but placed in the women’s 50-54 division due to USAT age-group rules.)

The duathlon was a 10k run—38k bike—5k run, with Stacy coming in at 41:49, 1:12:55, 18:57 respectively. She writes,

The Nationals were much more competitive than last year because the USAT made a big push to get everyone to come. To do this they made it much more difficult to qualify for Worlds any way besides showing up to Nationals.

I had a very exciting race. I let for the first four miles of the 10K but there was a woman on my shoulder. With two miles to go, she blew by me. She put a minute twenty on me by the time she got to T1. Another woman passed me on the first of three 8-mile bike laps, but I was able to hold my position easily after that. It was very hot–70 at the start and 88 by my finish.

I turns out that the woman who won—the good runner—ran the Olympic Trials for the 10,000 in 1980 and the Olympic Marathon Trials in 1984. Her name is Ellen Hart and she was Ellen Hart Pena when she was married to Federico Pena, Clinton’s Transportation Secretary.

Stuart [Calderwood] and Kieran were there to cheer me this time since Stuart’s Penn Relays team fell through this year.

And this just in… new CPTC member Judith Tripp was also in Richmond, and also placed 3rd in her division (60-64). Results here.
