From Thom Little of the Open:

The men’s road team had many stellar performances this weekend.

CPTC men came in 2nd in Grete’s Gallop beating NYAC and UA this Sunday.

The scoring 5 in this race for CPTC featured two great half marathon debuts, a 1:12:32 for Carlos Jamieson and a 1:13:14 for Stan Berkow.  The half is a challenging race for anyone, but to run those kinds of times on your first go is very impressive.

The men were led by Matt Lacey 1:10:59 and Patrick Hynes 1:11:37.  Carlos and Stan were next then rounded out by a 1:14:47 by John Kenworthy who ran a PR.  Another PR of note was Herb Plummer with a 3 minute PR with a finish of 1:23:27.

CPTC also had another crew racing this weekend and they came in 2nd overall and 1st in men’s ultra category at the NB Reach the Beach Relay (198.7M) in NJ this weekend. This grueling relay was completed in 23 hours, 1 minute and 30 seconds.  With only a five man team, I don’t think that there was much sleeping going on.  The team was Ken Tso (fresh off of the Chicago marathon), Cliff Gerber, Gal Cohen, Neil Sussman, and Kieren Garvey.

Also in NJ, Atilla Sabahoglu had a 3 min PR running a 1:13:19 and winning the “Shades of Death” Half Marathon in NJ.

In Hartford, CT this Saturday Jeff Ares ran a 2:44:31 (a huge 10 minute PR) placing 22nd overall.

And lastly, I want to give a shout out to Ken Tso for running 2:56:32 marathon (a 1:09 PR) in Chicago last weekend.

From Matt Lacey of the XC Squad:

It was another successful weekend for the CPTC Men’s XC (and roads) team, with a victory at the Harry Murphy Cross Country Classic in Van Cortland Park, and a 2nd place finish at Grete’s Great Gallop Half Marathon in Central Park. John Pollina led the charge in the XC 5k, placing 2nd in 17:20, taking the scalp of sub 4 min miler Rob Novak, and an age group victory, in the process. For whatever reason, Pollina did not factor in the team scoring, but our next five runners, Vincent Martyr, Glen Carnes, Melvyn Stafford, and Joe Kennedy were enough to best the field.

Over on the roads, at the 13.1 mile distance in Central Park, our team posted a strong 2nd place showing, and our fastest team time for half marathons on the year. Matt Lacey led the way in 1:10:59, followed closely by Patrick Hynes, whose 1:11:37 secured a sub-elite start for the NYC Marathon in a few weeks. In their debuts at the half marathon distance, Carlos Jamison and Stan Berkow came next in 1:12:32 and 1:13:14. Making a rare roads appearance, John Kenworthy rounded out the scoring in 1:14:47. Had the race gone deeper than 5 runners, CPTC would have been all set, as Chris Spooner, John Barry, and Eric Boucher came in a few ticks over 1:15, 1:16, and 1:17 respectively.
Upcoming this weekend it’s back to Van Cortland Park for the Kurt Steiner Cross Country Classic, a 5k, with in person registration available, and a strong CPTC presence expected.
Until then, happy training.
Matt Lacey

From Andrew Moore of the 50+:

It’s a case of quality over quantity for this race. The CPTC 50+ squad placed first again while fielding only three runners – and one fast 60+.  All of the runners placed in the top ten of their divisions with Chris Donnelly placing 4th 50-54 (1:24:50), Alan Ruben placing 1st 55-59 (1:26:55) and Arthur Palmer placing 10th 55-59 (1:36:45). Our team score was helped by newly 60 year-old Yasuhiro Makoshi who won the 60-64 age group with a 1:26:16 and scored in two divisions – thanks Yasuhiro.

Also a shout out goes to some CPTC 50+ at the other weekend race – the Harry Murphy Cross Country Classic. Congrats to Tommy Raymond for winning the 50-54 division and Frank Morton for placing third in the 55-59 age group. Nice running!

Great job everyone!

Next up is the NYC Marathon November 4th

From Hank Schiffman of the 60+:

Yasuhiro’s Makoshi’s advancing to Men 60-64 was a win-win for both the 50+ and 60+. His 26:16 (84.85%, eighth AG man overall) would have been good for 1st in Men 55-59. He was better placed directly in our group, giving our Men 60+ first place. Chris Donnelly and Alan Ruben were able to double dip him also for first in Men 50+.

After the race, Chris was beaming, “I had a good day.” Let me second that. CPTC Men 50+ has so much talent it has interchangeable parts.

Thus our 60+ guys bested Taconic; 4:32:59 to their 4:45:29. Granted, Tim Delaney, their premier runner, came to grief towards the finish. As I passed the 7th Avenue exit on the way to the line he was walking far to the right, supported by Peter Ciaccia, ambling on towards the finish. As I passed, I said, “oh no, Timothy!” He turned, saw me, dropped Peter and took off passing me with every intention of besting me to the line. He may have gone 150 meters and imploded. My legs had de-evolved from fine fettle in the first 2 miles, to the laugh track by mid race. I took yesterday off from cycling to see if it would bear fruit during this event; probably I just wasted a good day on wheels. But, as Chris Neuhoff said, perhaps I did benefit. Whatever, my time was a quarter of a minute slower than the Brooklyn Half. This old clock is slowing down. BTW, Tim crossed the line in a hobble, white as a ghost in a snowstorm. He was wheeled into the medical tent. He is an example of the “magnificent b@st@rd” we associate with the best of runners. The only other place they come back from the dead like that is Hollywood.

Chris Neuhoff was our 3rd scorer in 1:35 flat, seventh men 60-64, 77.79%, a lucky 77th AG men overall. It was a good day for this Chris as well. We were backed up by Rick Shaver, 1:43:43, Phil Vasquez 1:44:25, and Kevin McGuire, 1:48:26. And, of course all those CPTC members who were out there cheering for us.

We did seize the day,

Cptn Hank
