Welcome to the Autumn racing season and congratulations to the Men’s 50-59 team on their victory at the Bronx 10 Mile race!

This year’s Bronx 10-mile race had great spectator temperatures with humidity levels a bit out of comfort range for racing.  The CPTC men’s 50-59 team had 8 racers cross the finish line.

CPTC’s team scorers in the 50+ age group were Brad Kelley (1:00:15), Daniel Ifcher (1:01:04), and David Dorsey (1:04:14).  Their combined time of 3:05:22 was over 13 minutes ahead the next place team.

About 10 minutes before the start of the race Brad Kelley was quietly tying his shoelaces about 800 meters up the road from the start line.  He commented then that his most recent speed workout consisted of repeat quarters and he had been unable to get under 90 second for any of them.  So it was amazing to see that Brad was able to string 40 of those quarters together for the race, getting second place in the 50-54 age group!  Brad also scored for the CPTC 40+ team, helping CPTC take second place in that category.  Brad states that he’s happy with his performance, considering his recent prolonged struggle to get past some injuries.  He adds, “Thanks for all who cheered, I did my best.”  Nice job Brad!

Daniel Ifcher followed close behind Brad, taking 3rd in the 50+ age category.  His time, 1:01:04, places him at 6th on the All-time CPTC M50+ list.  On Strava, Daniel comments, “Really happy with this one because I hadn’t raced since Queens (10K) and had some calf issues in between. Thought I’d go out conservatively, but just latched onto CPTC morning crew pack of Arjay, Thierry, Kevin and Neal. Great pack to work together and just stayed with it.  Had Arjay in view the whole way and maybe Thierry which was great to work together.”  Daniel set a 1-minute masters personal record over last year, closing the final mile in 5:43.  Congratulations Daniel!

David Dorsey was able to produce a 5:55 last mile split after averaging 6:29 over the first nine miles on his way to placing 5th overall in the 50-54 age group.  David’s last mile hints at his mile speed which he exhibited in September on 5th Avenue, where he ran 5:05.  David recounts: “At mile 5 I told myself to try and step up the pace to at least get under 65 minutes.  I heard Tony say it’s hard but grind it out to the end.  So, with 2 miles left I blocked out the tightness in my legs and went all out including that downhill blast to the finish.  What a rush!  More work to be better prepared for the hills at the Staten Island Half! — Not too shabby,” he claims.  Agreed!

Rounding out the Masters 50-59 team:

CPTC welcomes Gregg Lemos-Stein back to the NYC racing scene following his extended stay across the pond.  Gregg finished in 1:05:03 (7th in 50-54 age group) in his first NYRR 10-mile race.  This time is also Gregg’s Personal Record by 2 minutes at this distance since the Prospect Park based Cherry Tree 10M back in 2010.  Gregg’s performance was inspired by “watching David Dorsey up ahead and feeling good that he was remaining in sight.” But, he adds, “in the second half David kept getting smaller and smaller even as I sped up with the late downhills. Honored to be the 4th man albeit a non-scorer because our team absolutely crushed it — 4 of the top 7 in our category!”

The 50-59 CPTC’ers demonstrated our depth with an additional four finishers: Edwin Hernandez, Herve Megras, Michael Siegell and Oscar Garcia all paced through the 10-mile course.  Edwin’s time was his second best over five finishes since 2014; this was Herve’s third finish in the Bronx and his second-best time; Michael continued to show his CPTC spirit with his 8th 2019 NYRR finish to date; and Oscar finished his 8th consecutive Bronx 10-mile.

In other CPTC 50-59 squad news, Marc Mizrahi and Ron Romano ran the Berlin Marathon on the same day as the Bronx race.  Marc, shooting for a time under 3 hours, set a PB at 3:01:33.  He mentions that this was his first fast marathon since Chicago 2009 (3:07) and that Berlin was a great race despite a tough last 2 miles.  Marc will get back to racing after taking a little time off to recover.  Ron, running with no expectations in his fourth marathon of the year due to some limits on his training, was able to produce a 3:15 finish time.  Ron plans on two more marathons this year.

The CPTC men 50+ group now leads their Age Category with 99 points.  With only three races left on the scoring calendar CPTC has a 19-point lead over the Dashing Whippets at 80 points and the North Brooklyn Runners with 60 points.

The remaining Club scoring races are the Staten Island Half (Oct 13), NYCM (Nov 3) and the Ted Corbitt 15K (Dec 15).  Good luck to those running in these events.  Note that the Ted Corbitt 15K is nearly sold out so sign up before it’s too late!

Thank you – Mark Lindrud
