Cold, you want cold? We got cold for you right here.

Now that that’s out of the way, our 60+ men took 1st place, ahead of 2nd place Witold’s just shy of 10 minutes – 3:18:42 to 3:28:03. That puts us in 2nd place for the year. Taconic did not show today; they didn’t have to. We had to work for our spot. Taconic is on its second dynasty in the past 10 years. Brooklyn ruled in between.

2nd place come Club Night was a result of a collective effort. We have talent, depth and interest; thanks.

Our 70+ men only had 2 starters due to injuries, but it did not affect the year standings, we took 3rd place for the year. A big Thank You to Captain Dave! He looked at the spreadsheet and saw a spot on the podium on Club Night, marshaled our resources and there will be Tiffany to come. We now have motivation in the ranks.

Dave hosted his wonderful brunch with our 60+ ladies. Another big thank you to Dave.

Charles:

Traffic  traffic  at my start wheels were not turning properly my running speed was confusing at times I ended up on the side walk a slow start for a while but  I enjoyed the run  hot Jamaica on a cold  AMERICAN day

Hank:

Factoid: if this race was on the day before I would have taken 1st in age group. John Shostrom turned 65 and entered the age group race day.

I thought I had played all the angles like an old pro but ended up feeling like a rookie. Wore all my high tech, lightweight stuff, had a cotton T-shirt over it all and wrapped myself in an old NYCC finisher, mylar race sheet. It even had the tape to hold it in place as a cape. But my fingers went numb anyway. Things turned around at mile 4, and felt comfortable for the better part of the second half of the race. It was all about concentration and focus. You can’t let up. Discipline and dignity. Well, better to focus on discipline and hope dignity follows.

Alan:

I thought I ran a pretty well-paced race, picking up about 10 seconds per mile on the second loop. It didn’t feel that much different from my golden era, except that the pace was 2 minutes per mile slower! I’m hoping that not all of that is due to age and that some is due to my problematic knee and current lack of fitness. Despite the cold, it was actually a good day for racing, and many thanks to Dave for the post-race brunch.

Kevin:

A great race to cap off a season of road and XC racing. I chased Barbara all the way around the park twice but just couldn’t close the gap. A little off last years pace but happy to still be at it.

I continued the chase to Dave’s after race holidays get together. What a fine group of 60+ & 70+ men and women. Bravo Dave.

See you at Coogan’s.

Back to the race. Certainly the cold temperatures brought out the best in some in the field. It was extraordinary in another respect; the number of men who ran their age in minutes. Iain Levine of Brooklyn RR ran 57 minutes at 58, a most remarkable 86.11% effort. I was told this was merely 6 days after running a 2:55 marathon. Jonathan Kline of Dashing Whippets at 58 ran 57.46/85.14%. Joe Kelly, unaffiliated, from Katonah ran 58.18 at 59 fro an AG% of 85.18. These are the youngest people to do so in this event that I can recall. Witold’s had a runner, Luis Tipan, who ran 63 at age 64, an effort of 82.62%. The last member of this bizzare club was myself, 69 years old, running 68:27/79.95%, the only dog who got a bone without running over 80%.Our Barbara Byrne‘s even more superlative effort of 86.77% which was 75 minutes at 67 years of age could not propel her into the age in minutes club because statistically, to do so, women would have to run over 100%. The phenomenon is a fluke, only open to men of a certain age and ability.

Registration is open for the Washington Heights 5k and the Healthy Kidney 10k, oh my.
