From Hank Schiffman of the 60+:

Bob Glover once remarked that you loose 15 seconds per 5k after the age of 50. Kevin McGuire obviously didn’t hear it. Last year he ran 24:20, this year it was 24:14, 3rd in AG. Also in the 60-64 AG, Dan Molloy emerging from injury ran 24:28, 4th in AG. Last year his 24:13 was right on the Glover target.

Our most mature guy, The Great Sid Howard, in his first NYRR race in recovery mode ran 28:27, 1st in AG; a few months shy of 76, a few months on from walking the 5th Avenue Mile injured. Sid too is getting faster.

Our next to most senior guy was Hal Lieberman, a year and a half into the 70-74 age group. Not yet recovered from injury, he ran last week’s USATF Master’s 5k XC Championships in Carmel, Indiana, where he took 6th in age group, 25:37. Hal ran this year’s Fred Lebow in 26:53, 4th in AG, (last year 30:09).

In the 65-69 age group, Dave Delano and me, Hank Schiffman, adhered to the Glover rule of thumb. Dave ran 29:43, 5th in AG, 29:30 last year. My time was 21:48, (21:34 last year) one step behind Joe Porcaro, same time who took 1st in AG despite an obvious error in timing. Online records have someone running over 100%.

Also adhering to the Glover doctrine was Gary Muhrcke, 25:15 with 23:59 last year.

Injuries notwithstanding, this is the breakdown:

2013                   2014                   delta          2014 AG%

Hal             30:09         26:53         -196           66.39%

Kevin        24:20         24:14         -6               67.41%

Dave         29:30         29:43         +13            58.05%

Hank         21:34         21:48         +14            76.99%

Dan           24:13         24:28         +15            67.35%

Sid                              28:27                            66.62%

Given these trends, Hal should be running in open in a few years and Kevin might consider changing his name from McGuire to Makoshi!

Here are the 5k XC races in VC Park this year:

Kurt Steiner 9/21       Harry Murphy 10/5    Fred Lebow 11/16

Kevin                  24:45                                                                 24:14

Hal                      27:13                                                                 26:53

Hank                  21:54                                                                 21:48

Fred                                                         31:48

Dave                                                        30:57                            29:43

Dan                                                                                               24:28

Sid                                                                                                 28:27

Irrefutably, everyone did better in the Championships. Dan and Sid are absolutely best.

Currently, I believe I have Dan, Dave, Chris and myself committed to run Corbitt’s 15k. I am also registered for the CPTC/UA 10k the following week in Central Park. Let me know if you intend to run these races. Let Dave know if you are going to his post Corbitt’s gathering. Tony should be moving his Tuesday workouts to The Armory come December. These are some of the most satisfying workouts of the year. We should soon see a post for our annual holiday party.

Back to walking down stairs as if there was no marathon a few weeks ago,

Your Captain Hank
