Men’s Open Recap from Greg Cass:
The NYRR Team Champs race is always a bit of a wildcard.  Any race deep in the heart of summer is always asking for tough racing conditions, and the weather didn’t disappoint last weekend.  As an added bonus, because of construction on the 102nd Street Transverse, the traditional course that skips the Harlem Hills was forced to detour through the toughest stretch of the park in the first mile.  But as always, the entire course was loaded with cheering teammates, and the 10-deep scoring let the Open Men show off their impressive depth.

Leading the team was newcomer Matt Lawder (check him out on Strava here) in a speedy 26:15.  Next up were Kyle Marks, who clocked a 26:21, and Eddie Mulder at 26:32.  The 3 of them worked together through most of the early miles, and hopefully that teamwork continues through the summer and fall as Matt prepares for the NYC Marathon and Kyle for the Chicago Marathon.  Jeff Ares came in next at 26:54, breaking 27 minutes for the first time in his racing career on a particularly tough day for racing fast.  Matt Lacey and Greg Cass were the next 2 through the finish, at 27:35 and 27:38, respectively, with Matt confidently catching and dropping Greg in the finisher’s chute.  Matt Deangelis came in next at 27:50, capping off an impressive spring and summer of racing by scoring for the Open Men for the first time.  Matt was also our first Masters finisher – we’ll take the double dip anytime you want to run that fast!  Corey Wall and Martin Huber each came through just under 28:00, running 27:58 and 27:59.  Corey bumped up his distance for this one as he’ll be spending most of the fall preparing for road miles (and he’s on Strava too).  Our final scoring member was another Masters runner, Dan Gay, who finished with a 28:23.  Dan has spent most of the spring and summer training and racing ultramarathons, so we appreciate him dealing with the torture of a shorter road race to help out the team.

Congrats to all of our runners and all of our teams – great day for the Orange!  Before the Club Points series turns to longer races, we’ll have one more shot at a shorter distance at the Percy Sutton 5K on August 27 – registration is still open so sign up soon!  Then it’s on to the last stretch of longer races – Bronx 10-Miler, Staten Island Half, NYC Marathon, and the Ted Corbitt 15K.  We’ll need everyone’s help fielding strong teams for all the longer distance races – hope to see many of you out there!
