Our club brought a full track-and-field squad to compete at the NYC Qualifying Challenge on Randall’s Island this past weekend.

Starting with some highlights from the often-overlooked field events: Kateema Riettie won the javelin competition with one of the top throws in the U.S. so far this year (52.12 m). In second place was Grace Zollman, with a strong throw of 47.45m. In the shot put, John Langhauser took second, throwing 16.51m; Karl Hawke placed eighth in the high jump.

In the decathlon, Andrew Hogue scored 3808 total points to win the overall competition, setting 4 PRs in the process (100m, long jump, javelin, and 1500m).

There were some very impressive performances on the track as well. Jodyann Raymond set a new club record in the 100m, winning the event in 11.91s. Andrea Ostrowski made the Masters all-time list with a time of 14.94 (and then added a 30.87 in the 200, also earning her a spot on the all-time list). Lisa Daley and Joy Romulus both made the all-time list in the 200m, and added strong doubles in the 400m as well, with Romulus making the all-time list.

Brian Gertzen ran a fast 1500m, making the all-time list with a 3:50.61 and taking fifth place in his heat. Les Page and John Pollina both PR’d.

Doug Labar, who turns 55 this year, broke 13 minutes in the steeplechase, setting a 27-second PR of 12:59.98. He’s got his sights now set on the CPTC all-time list, which would require running 12:27 or quicker.

Attila Sabahoglu and Carl Dambkowski dominated the first heat of the 5000m, taking first and third respectively. In the second heat, Jay Barry used his kick to nab the victory, running 15:48, a seven-second PR, in very windy conditions.

Full results will be posted soon in the Journal.
