EDWARD M. COPLON
February 16, 1939-June 19, 2007
Ed Coplon, the third president of the Central Park Track Club, died on June 19. He had been suffering with Alzheimer’s Disease for the last 13 years. Ed, an architect, joined the Club in 1977 and was an active competitor in distances from 400 meters to the marathon. He ran many great races for the CPTC over the years, with a marathon best of 2:56:48 in the 1982 New York City Marathon at age 43, and was a member of several record-setting CPTC masters relay teams, including the 1989 team that set an American record for the 4×800 relay in the 50-59 age group.
Ed was club president from 1984-1988, and with his infectious smile and deadly low-key sense of humor that got others to help out the team whenever he asked, he helped oversee a period of tremendous growth for the CPTC, from a local team to a national power on the roads and the track. As running was an extremely important part of Ed’s life, most of his friends were members of the running community. A memorial service is being planned by his sons, Ben and Jon. As soon as details are set they will be posted on this website. In the meantime, if you have any questions please contact Norman Goluskin, 845-255-3537 or ngoluskin@hotmail.com.
