Doug Stern, an important and notable member of the New York running scene, passed away yesterday. Club President Alan Ruben wrote the following remembrance:

Anyone who met Doug — and there are many on CPTC who have, either through his deep-water running programs, swim coaching or through our running community — came away a better person. I remember years ago doing his deep-water running program. (Aside from last year, it was probably the last time I was injured. It was so long ago that I remember Fred Lebow trying out the program with a view to it becoming a NYRR member offering.) I also clearly remember his enormous support just past Columbus Circle in several of my New York City Marathons. Anyone who has run the marathon knows just how much of a blur that part of the race is, so to actually remember his face at that point says an awful lot about his enthusiasm for his fellow athletes. He will be sorely missed.
