With two big races this weekend, and poor weather on the horizon, we expected few people would show up to the Daniel Webster Statue on Thursday. Fortunately, the rain turned out to be a mere drizzle, which caused a higher than expected turnout. Once Harry Lichtenstein showed up, there were 27 of us in attendance (which included about seven people there just to get a pre-race run in). The pre-workout buzz was about how the 8K race on Saturday would go on as scheduled no matter what the conditions are. The race would not get cancelled. I mean, the odds of the NYRR cancelling the race were about as high as me picking 30 out of 32 first round tournament match-ups correct. Heck, there was a better chance of a three-way tie occurring on an episode of Jeopardy than the race getting postponed!
To ensure that the non-racers didn t have it easy, Tony planned a tough workout for those not competing: a down the ladder affair with a 2 mile, 1.5 mile and 1 mile interval. Due to the slick conditions and smaller than usual numbers in attendance, at 7:14 everyone started out in one pack. This cased havoc in the A group, as a few runners started the first interval before everyone had finished their warm-up.
If anything, people ran the workout at a slightly faster pace than originally planned. And that turned out to be a good thing, as by the end of the workout the rain picked up in intensity. With no one wanting to stand around in the cold precipitation, everyone quickly departed home, presumably to watch March Madness in the comfort of their living rooms.
