CPTC NEW BALANCE TO COMPETE AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
March 5, 2012
NEW YORK – Central Park Track Club New Balance will send three athletes and a coach to the IAAF World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.
CPTC New Balance’s Julius Mutekanga will race the men’s 800 meters. This will be Mutekanga’s second World
Championship competing in the event. He also ran at last year’s World Outdoors Championships in Daegu, Korea, and
is likely to make the Uganda team for the London Olympics having hit the Olympic Games “B” Qualifier last summer.
Mutekanga graduated from Long Island University and is currently Uganda’s top-ranked 800-meter runner.

Joining Mutekanga at the World Championships are teammates Erison Hurtault and Jeremy Bascom.

Erison Hurtault will compete in the men’s 400 meters. This will be Hurtault’s third World Championships representing
the Commonwealth of Dominica in the 400 meters. He raced the 400 at the 2009 Berlin and 2011 Daegu World Outdoor
Championships. Hurtault also is a 2008 Olympian and has secured his spot for 2012 Olympic Team for Dominica when
he hit the Olympic Games “B” Standard last summer. Hurtault was an eleven-time Ivy League Champion while at
Columbia University.

Jeremy Bascom will race the men’s 60 meters. Bascom has had breakout season since joining CPTC New Balance.
Bascom was 4th at the Millrose Games and won the USATF New York Indoor Championship to secure his spot on the
Guyana World Indoor Team. Bascom is training for the Olympic Games in the 100 meters and 4 x 100m relay. Like
Mutekanga, Bascom graduated from Long Island University.

CPTC New Balance Head Coach Devon Martin will also join the club’s athletes in Istanbul. Coach Martin has been
named to Uganda National Coaching Staff for the World Indoors Championships.
