As nominal captain of the CPTC 60+ men’s track team, I have been asked to report on our recent exploits at the Millrose games this past Saturday. First, the bad news. We finished dead last in a field of 4 60+ teams, and looked even worse by comparison to the world record setting 50+ team that was sharing the track with us older gents. However, our cumulative time was 4:52, only 4 seconds off the CPTC team indoor record (set in 2012) and actually better than the CPTC outdoor record for our age group.

Allan Dias, with not that much training, led off with a sterling 68, followed by Hank Schiffman’s strong 74, my 77, and Doug Labar’s last leg, 72, when there was practically no runner left on the track. For the first time ever, I took a spill after my run (actually I tripped on the pole trying to get into the infield and out of the way) but no damage was done except to my pride. If we trained a bit more I am convinced we will break the CPTC indoor record next year.

At all odds, we had a great time, felt honored to participate in such an historic and tradition-laden event (I’d use the word “iconic” but my wife hates that overused description), and look forward to more such Millrose opportunities in years to come and outdoors at Penn. I hope this also inspires the up and coming 59 year olds to get out on the track with us when they reach the exalted 60+ plateau. Running fast is a lot of fun, even if it is not as fast as it feels.
