From Lauren Carter of the Open:

The saying goes “Ducks fly together.”  ‘Sticking’ to tradition, it was a hot and humid morning as the Women’s Open Team took to the road for the Mini 10K.  As the gun went off, through the first few miles Lady Orange was a literally a PACK of orange with about 7 women running together through the first two miles.  The women’s open proved just how team oriented we are by working together in pairs or packs during the entire race to beat not just their competitors but also the sweltering heat.  Their efforts were rewarded with a third place finish behind West Side Runners and NYAC.

Christina Argueta proved her resiliency as the first woman to cross the line in a finish in a time of 37:47.  Behind her, Ivetta Ramirez(38:16), Anisa Arsenault(38:19), and Lauren Carter(39:31) battled for the next three places.  They crossed the finish as the second, third, and fourth scorers, respectively.  Jen Busse, the Women’s Open 5th scorer, paired with Alex Bernardi to run a solid race and held on strong to complete the race in a time of 38:38.  Bernardi finished just seconds behind her, running 38:44.

From Ani Go of the 40+:

Women’s running.  The sport for women has evolved since the very first Mini, 44 years ago, sponsored by a shaving gel for women and a field that included Playboy bunnies.  The field however, also included serious women athletes, represented by Kathrine Switzer and Nina Kuscsik, who still runs and in fact participated in this year’s Mini as well.

We love this race as it’s a tribute to how far women’s running has come, and includes a great elite field!

As past history has it, the weather was challenging.  Close to 80 degrees at the start and the sun decided to try to bake us all into the road.

The scoring team for the master’s 40+ women was made up of two 40+ and a pull from the spectacular Stacy Creamer from the 50+ team.  Stacy was actually the first scorer, her 43:18 also placing her 1st in her age group.  Way to go Stacy!  New to our team, and second to score, was Teiko Shigezumi in 45:41.  She debuts to our team and is instantly a contributor to scoring!  Welcome to the master’s league!   I came to represent in orange caboosing  with my 47 flat to round out the team.

Congrats to our open women’s team and 50’s and 60’s teams who all podiumed!

TRACK NEWS:  Congrats to Roberta Little who PR’d in the 400 with 68:13 in the 400m, making the top 10 masters list!

Judy Stobbe runs 5:05 in the 1500m as her swan song to the 45+ age group, tying her lifetime PR in that distance from college!

GO ORANGE!

From Sylvie Kimche of the 50+ and 60+:

After a “no-show” at the Brooklyn Half, the W60+ team came back with a bang and took first place by more than 1/2 hr ahead of 2nd team NY Flyers !  🙂

Sorry to sound like a broken record, but it was the same M.O. as most of our previous team races.

Barbara Byrne

Barbara took 1st place for the team in 47:30 (an 86.19% AG%) despite suffering from the heat and dehydration. That was good for 2nd place in her age group behind Sharon Vos who turned 60 recently. Poor Barbara cannot catch a break in her age group with Kathy Martin usually besting everyone in her age group but who dropped out of the Mini, not sure why…, and now Sharon Vos graduating to the W60-64 age group….

Sylvie, your team captain, came in 2nd for the team in 49:44, good for an 88.84% AG% and 1st place in the W65-69 age group. Coming back from 5 weeks of cycling on rather steep terrain, with extremely tight quads & hamstrings due to all these steep climbs, I’m really happy that I could run the same exact time as the Scotland Run 10K on April 4, run in much cooler conditions… Cycling is not good for speed but it definitely helps for strength…

Judith was 3rd for the team in 59:51, and took 4th place in the W65-69 age group.

Lynn, our founder and ultimate teammate, enjoyed the celebration of women in running that is the Oakley Mini 10K. She finished in 1:09:59, good for 4th place in her W70-74 age group.

Due to our absence at the Brooklyn Half but thanks to our win on Sat, the W60+ team is now in 2nd place with 45 pts, behind NY Flyers with 51 pts… within striking distance, as long as we have a team in all the next races (except the NYCM where we know we won’t have a team)

The W50+ team came in 3rd place.

As usual, Stacy led the charge. She was 1st in her age group in 43:18, a 6:59 pace and 84.59% AG%.

In the absence of other CPTC W50+ runners, Barbara and Sylvie double-dipped and were respectively 2nd and 3rd for the W50+ team.

And for good measure, with only 2 CPTC W40+ racers, Stacy also double-dipped and led the W40+ team to a 5h place finish. Way to go!

Despite the hot weather, it was a great day of racing and camaraderie and celebration of women running.

Congrats to the younger teams for their great results and thanks to the cheering squad, especially our coach Tony, who always lift our spirits and improves our strides with his cheerful comments. 🙂

See you in 2 weeks at the Front Runners 5miler!

In the meantime, stay hydrated!

Go Orange!
