Nothing was unusual about the Mini 10K this past Saturday. It was a sweltering, sunny day for the CPTC Women’s Open team as they sped through the first mile cheered on by their teammates. Cat Beck lead the way with a top 30 finish in a time of 36:10.

She was shortly followed by Lauren Carter, who ran for a 1s PR in a time of 37:20.

Although getting out to a fast start, Christina Argueta was able to maintain consistent splits and finish in a time of 37:31.

The fourth scorer for the Women’s Open ran this race pregnant just a year ago. Thoughts of knowing her newborn son would be there to greet her at the finish kept Ivette Ramirez focused and forging ahead in the heat. She finished with a time of 37:47 and an 18s PR. Alex Bernardi rounded out the scoring with a strong finish of 39:03 to help the Women’s Open team place 4th in a very competitive team field.
This race also welcomed newcomers and old faces to the the 10K distance. After battling injury, Hannah Rose made a happy and healthy return to the road. She was able to make it through about 4 miles when her legs suddenly became heavy, but was pushed on to the finish by cheering teammates. Maria Jangsten made her 10K debut. She set herself a goal of running under 42 minutes and comfortably cleared it with a time of 41:35.

Performance of the day undeniably goes to Amy Kvilhaug, who, despite her little experience in the distance, ran over a minute PR! Amy finished the race in a time of 43:11.

The Mini 10k is always an inspirational race. It’s one of the few all women races, and brings out a classy elite field of women, like mom of a toddler and fellow masters runner Deena Kastor. Women of all ages run and so it goes for our master’s team! Although we didn’t have a full 40+ women’s team, we always have great runners in the stable. Representing the 40+ team was Judy Stobbe, who had pretty much hopped off a plane and onto the start line. Badass Judy had also gotten a PR on the track the week before in the 1500 and this shows her versatility on the road as well. Conditions were tough on her with not enough sleep, inadequate nutrition, and not so ideal conditions, but the lady toughed it out! Striking the pins from the 50’s gang was Wonder Wanda Wang and Captain Sylvie (who bowled strikes in 40’s, 50’s, and first place 60’s!).
Congrats ladies, well done!

On a warm and humid morning this past Saturday June 14, in the absence of our newest, youngest and fastest W60+ teammate, Barbara, sidelined with an abductor muscles injury, the seasoned team of Lynn, Judith and Sylvie – average age 69!!! – took a brilliant 2nd place behind the Van Cortland TC team – average age 61….
Yours truly, your captain, had a good first 5k but could not keep it up in the second half and finished in 49:10 (my watch said 49:07 but who’s counting???), good for first place both for the team and the W65-69 age group with a 88.46 AG%.

Despite feeling dizzy before the race, Judith Tripp ran a solid 57:00, second for the team and 3rd in the W65-60 age group with a 76.30 AG%.

Rounding up the team, was our CPTC founder, Lynn Blackstone still running and racing at 73yrs-young and enjoying every minute of it! She ran 68:18, good for 7th place in her age group and a 70.27 AG%.
The sheer joy of Lynn scoring for the team was matched by my joy to find out we did have a team after all (i had not kept good track of who was running & was not aware/had forgotten that Lynn was running…..).
Way to go Lynn and Judith!
The W50+ team came in 6th, led by the lone W50-54 Wanda Wang. She ran 46:07, good for a 74.52 AG% and 8th in the very competitive W50-54 age group.
Judith and Sylvie doubled dipped and scored 3rd and 2nd respectively for the W50+ team.
And in the absence of our fast W40+ runners, Wanda also scored for the 40+ team in 2nd place and I triple-dipped to complete the W40+ team!!!
Congrats to our open team for their brilliant 4th place and THANKS to Tony and all our CPTC male teammates for the loud cheering. It really helps!
Now on to the next race in less than 2 weeks, the Front Runners New York LGBT Pride Run 5 miler on June 28. See you then!
