From Thom Little of the M Open:
On a very hot day (80F) the men’s open team came in 4th place in the Club Champs 5M. CPTC lost 3rd place to Urban Athletics by 8 seconds. While that is disappointing, it is something to learn from. Please keep those 8 seconds in mind on your next race. It doesn’t matter if an opponent is right in front of you or 15 seconds behind you, they could be carrying the time needed to beat our team so leave NOTHING on the course and next time we will beat Urban.
Yet again, the team was led by Greg Cass, who delivered a solid performance despite the heat. Newcomer Will Davis has been climbing the CPTC charts and was right behind Greg. Matt Lacey, Patrick Hynes, and J Hornsby rounded out the top 5.
The intrasquad softball game after the race had some great excitement including Tony’s team coming back from a 5-1 deficit to beat Joe (E-5) Kennedy’s team 7-6. All had fun despite some uncharacteristic smack talking by Coach Tony.
Greg Cass 26:40

From Jim McQuade of the M 40+:
Despite the heat (80 degrees) and the humidity (87%), 15 men from the 40+ category crossed the finish line at Club Champs on Saturday. The 40+ Men’s Team placed second slightly behind the Urban Athletics team) with Jesus Mateo De Castro, Jim McQuade, David Dorsey, Thom Little, and John Milone scoring for the team. Solid performances also were turned in by David Bosch, Alex Bruskin, Nigel Francis, En Pum Cho, Mickey Hawtrey, Michael Ahern, David Greenberg, Michael Siegell, Takeshi Yamazaki, and Andy Kiss. Great race to all in very tough conditions.
From Andrew Moore of the M 50+:
A hot day and a tough race! Congrats to our 50+ racers on a steamy Central Park morning. In 80 degree weather and 87% humidity, the first 50+ team was West Side followed by Brooklyn RRC – our CPTC guys came out with a fourth place finish – 1:35:58, one second behind Front Runners at 1:35:57- we will have to start leaning at the tape! A big well done for those who ventured out yesterday: Alan Ruben (31:53), Yasuhiro Makoshi (31:59), Chris Donnelly (32:06), Peter Allen (33:20), Budd Heyman (37:06), Oscar Garcia (37:17), Frank Morton (41:15), and Stephen Bernstein (52:34), and Tom Raymond who lived to fight another day – thanks to all!
The team points race is closing up – so let’s recover and look to the next race, the Harlem 5K on August 25 – and hope for cooler temperatures.
From Hank Schiffman of the M 60+:
Mens 60+ :
With speed and depth, we came in a minute shy of Taconic RR for a solid 2nd place. We would have taken 9th had we run in 50+.
Bob Holliday, our Chicago politician, scored second for our team. You will be missed on your return to the windy city.
Chris Neuhoff always delivers the goods, our third scoring runner.
Everyone contributed to our noble effort. Rick, at 60 you are officially a dinosaur in running shoes, welcome aboard. Kevin McGuire, you must be eating yogurt, getting to bed early and sporting good genes, thanks.
At Coach Tony’s urging, Kevin, Dan Molloy and Chip Olsen worked together pulling their sled to windward in 80 degrees and 87% humidity, finishing within 1:11 of each other. Just these 3 guys alone would have taken 9th in mens 60+, and we still had Rick Shaver running ahead of them. So, had our second 3 runners, Rick, Dan and Chip, been our scorers, they would have placed 6th, including our first 3 guys taking second.
Harry Lichtenstein, Dave Delano and Fred Trilli completed our numbers, wearing the orange and sweating out 5 uncomfortable miles to the line.
That made 10 finishers for mens 60+ from CPTC, statistically a robust number out of the 63 men who ran this event for our team.
An embarrassment of riches, and it was double scoring points scoring race.
On to the hills of Harlem for the Percy Sutton 5k,
Captain Hank
