CPTC New Balance’s Jeremy Bascom will race the men’s 100 meters. Bascom has had breakout season since joining CPTC New Balance last summer. Bascom advanced to the semi-finals at World Indoors in Istanbul and last weekend won the 100m meters at the USA National Club Championships to secure his spot on the Guyana Olympic Team. Bascom is currently the fastest 100 meters sprinter in all of South America with his time of 10.19. His time of 10.19 also tied the Guyana National Record set 34 years ago. Bascom graduated from Long Island University in downtown Brooklyn.
Joining Bascom at the Olympic Games are teammates Erison Hurtault, Julius Mutekanga and Moussa Dembele.
Erison Hurtault returns to the Olympics in the men’s 400 meters. This is Hurtault’s second Olympics representing the Commonwealth of Dominica in the 400 meters. Hurtault has had an distinguished international career. He has raced the 400 meters at the 2009 Berlin and 2011 Daegu World Outdoor Championships as well as the 2012 Istanbul World Indoor Championship. In all three World Championships, he was a semi-finalist. Hurtault was an 11-time Ivy League Champion while at Columbia University.
Julius Mutekanga will race the men’s 800 meters. This will be Mutekanga’s first Olympics, though he has gained enormous international experience in the last year. Mutekanga competed at last year’s World Outdoors Championships in Daegu, Korea, and this year’s World Indoor Championships in Istanbul where he was a semi-finalist. Mutekanga also set stadium records at the Canadian National Track League international meets in Edmonton and Halifax. Mutekanga graduated from Long Island University and is currently Uganda’s top-ranked 800 meter runner.
Moussa Dembele will race the men’s 110m hurdles. Dembele has represented Senegal on the international scene since 2006, when he competed in the hurdles at the 2006 World Junior Championships in China. In 2007, Dembele was the 110m Hurdles Champion at the Junior African Games in Burkina Fauso. Dembele also advanced to the finals in the All-Africa Games in 2011 and in the Senior African Championships in 2012. Dembele was a three-time All America for Essex Community College in New Jersey.
Bascom, Hurtault, Mutekanga and Dembele all train in New York City.
