It seemed like a good idea at the time… staying up late Wednesday night to watch Gus Hansen, Huck Seed (little known fact: I ran college track & cross country with Huck s younger brother), and Shawn Sheikhan goat Phil Hellmuth into one of his famous screaming tirades. Unfortunately, payback came less than 24 hours later when I attended my first CPTC Thursday night workout in nearly 8 months. But I wasn’t going to get little things like lack of sleep and lack of having done a speed workout in ages prevent me from showing up at the Daniel Webster Statue.
One of the nicest January nights in recent memory brought 47 runners to the statue to do the staple 6.5 mile horseshoe workout. Coach Tony kicked off the festivities at 7:04 with announcements, and by 7:15 the first group toed the line. The majority of the runners did the entire loop, while a few people planning to race this Sunday wisely did a little less. Runners had to dodge lots of cyclists, other running clubs, and in one area, large droppings, in order to complete the task at hand. Afterwards, a bunch of CPTCers headed to headed to Steven Monte s 40th Birthday party, while others like myself headed home for a well earned early bedtime.
It s good to know that in 6 years of belonging to the club, very little has changed on Thursday night. Workouts start around the same time every week, everyone is friendly, and group running is always at full force. Heck, the only thing that s changed is the large number of number of runners, and a lack of workout recaps. While everyone can help to ensure that the workouts continue to be well attended, I will do my best to provide workout recaps. However, I’m going to need your assistance. I m not a gossip hound by any stretch of the imagination, so if there s any tidbit you would like to add to future workout reports, don t be shy, please just tell me. Granted, my memory gets fuzzy after running, but I will do my best to incorporate everything in a (relatively) timely manner. With a little luck, these recaps will get better over time.
