In Memoriam: Dr. Dan Hamner’s running history for the Central Park Track Club
Everyone who knew Dr. Dan Hamner knows what a vibrant and supportive teammate he was. Here is a
summary of his athletic career as a runner from the sprints to the distances. In 1992 he was part of our World Record setting M50-59 Sprint Medley team along with Sid Howard, Les Wright and Cliff Pauling (3:58.58). In 2002 he was part of our World Record setting M60-69 4×800 relay team in 2002 along with Sid Howard, Norman Goluskin and Jim Aneshansley.
At the other end of the range, Dan ran 12 marathons, including 7 sub-3 hours, with a PR of 2:51:43 in the 1990 New York City Marathon placing 7th in the 50-59 age group. In the early 90s Dan was at his best as a runner, recording times across an almost unheard range of distances from the 400 meters to the Marathon that still rank in the top ten times for the Central Park Track Club in the 50-59 age group! Specifically:
#9 1990 New York City Marathon 2:51:43
#6 1991 Staten Island Half Marathon 1:17:44
#10 1990 Winter Series 10M 1:02:08
#5 1992 Pete McArdle Memorial 15K XC 1:00:50
#5 1991 TAC National Masters Indoor Championships 1500m 4:27.0
#10 1991 TAC National Masters Indoor Championships 800m 2:12.42
#10 1993 USATF National Masters Indoor Championships 400m 60.95
In all Dan ran over 100 New York Road Runners races, and his best age graded race was the 85.4% 1990 Staten Island Half Marathon in 1:17:44. An inspiring running career of a special man who will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
