From Jacy Kruzel of the open:

The CPTC Open Women took home the gold on Sunday at the 2016 New Balance Bronx 10-Mile race, beating second place NYAC by over 7 minutes! The victory felt even sweeter with New Balance professional athlete Kim Conley taking the win!  Leading the women with a podium finish and #2 All Time-List accolades, was Kate Pallardy, crossing the line in 57:38.

Not skipping a beat after a Top 5 finish at the Philadelphia Rock and Rock Half Marathon just the weekend before, was Alex Bernardi in 58:21, good for 4th overall.

The top 10 streak was not to be stopped with Ivette Ramirez and Veronica Jackson finishing in 7th and 8th, both under the 60 minute barrier in 59:06 and 59:46.  Ivette acknowledged her negative split tactics were to thank for a speedy 5:36 last mile! She worked along with CPTC male teammate, Iber Vidals, to run a conservative first half and blaze to a 2:23 minute PR!  And rounding our the scoring five was Jacy Kruzel, who used the race as a controlled tune-up for next weekend’s Hartford Marathon and still managed to be the 14th woman across the line.

Alysia Dusseau raced the 10 Mile distance for the first time, which instantly led to a shiny “new” PR of 1:03:12. She said it is one of her new favorite races, and anyone who knows Alysia knows that ending at Yankee Stadium may have something to do with that 😉  Lindsay Kos used the crowds to get in a perfect tune-up for the Chicago Marathon as well. She felt strong and is ready to crush 26.2 miles in the windy city! Amanda Scheer not only ran her 2nd fastest 10 mile race, she ran a recent 10K and 5K PR in the last parts of the race as well. Way to finish off the race strong and fast! Dani Sturtz loved the great fall weather and thrived off running with CPTC teammates Irma and Nick.  It was a great tempo tune-up for a strong NYC Marathon to come, especially with her last mile being her fastest!

Before the women crushed the 10 Mile distance, we had many ladies dominating the 5K distance.  Chelsea Mailler was not too fond on the early start time but that did not stop her from leaving with a 4th place overall finish, 1st place in her age group AND a 16 second PR! Worth the early alarm for sure!  Erin Conroy and Tara Ellis worked together for more than half of the race and crossed the line 7th & 8th overall.  Great team (& sisterly) support out there.  Erin wanted to extend a big thank you to Tara pushing her through the 2nd mile. Jen Tiernan was not far behind, with a huge 34 second PR while dipping under the 20 minute barrier for the first time. She is having a great fall!

Ladies!!!

The 40+ ladies brought the Boogie to the Boogie down at Da Bronx for the Bronx 10miler standing at 2nd place on the podium!

Conditions were perfect for a wonderful run, fantastic times, and PR’s!  Our first official fall race of the season! We had a full roster of fleet ladies: Colleen McGurk, Amy Kvilhaug, and Judy Stobbe (of 50+team fame) making up the scoring team, with full support and rep from your Captain Ani GoAudrey Kingsley, and Meg Blake!

So many PR’s–the whole scoring team PR’d! So did your Captain!

In her own words, Ms. Colleen McG:

Great day in the Boogie Down Bronx!!! The plan was to start at 6:40 and then take it down. I went out a little faster in 6:28 but it felt really good and got into a nice little rhythm.

It was around Mile 6 that I slowed a bit. Once I realized that I was able to pick it back up and get back on pace. I think it was Mile 8 that I HEARD Tony‘s booming voice say “separate from the pain” which is what I tried to do!

One thing I am working on is finishing strong, especially in longer races. I was able to do that this time and my last mile was my fastest in 6:22. I also had a 10M PR and almost a minute course PR!

I’m Very happy with the execution of this race! AND it’s always so great to run with incredible teammates!! Thank you to everyone on the course cheering! Tony, Armando, Chelsea, Nigel! GO ORANGE!

Another big item to note is that the Lady Colleen hit the 80% AG with this race! Can I get a WOOT WOOT?

Our 2nd scorer, the amazin’ Amy K:

A sincere congrats to all CPTC’ers on today.  Conditions may have been near perfect, but racing 10 miles is still no cake walk.  And so many people ran so well.  It was great to see.  Our 40+ women’s team continues to deliver in team points races and we seemed to have a lot of depth and PR’s in our age group today.  Awesome!

It was a perfect day in the Bronx and despite baggage claim being a cluster and barely making it to the corral, things turned around quickly once the gun went off.  My goal was to start as comfortably as possible and then depending on how I felt I was either going to maintain or try to really race the last few miles.  I kept it pretty tame for the first 5, averaging 34:57 (so just under 7 pace).  I felt totally comfortable and in control so I decided that I would start picking up the pace.  There’s no doubt that the last few miles hurt, but I never lost ground, ran my last mile fastest at 6:34 pace and negative split the race by nearly a minute (33:59).  That is a big deal for me.  Since this was the 3rd ever 10-miler I’ve ever done, it was a PR for me by 14 minutes (my first two 10-milers were when I first started running).  Typically I’m pretty hard on myself, but today I am happy to say that I executed well and it all seemed to come together.

Thank you to all the support on the sidelines and to Coach Tony for his encouragement at mile 8.

Ding ding–Amy K is PR winner number 2!

Superstar Judy S rounds out our scoring team:

This was one long race for me!  But, always great to be around my CPTC team-mates for encouragement and motivation. Happy to report a 1:11:30 (7:09 pace)–it is my 10 mile PR. I’m definitely a ‘middle distance girl’, so this was a great effort for me without completely dying!   Proud that we podium’d on the master’s women’s age groups!  Super stellar performances and team work by all!

And mike drop–winner number 3 in the PR game. Can I get a WHAT WHAAAAT???

Judy also scored for her own 50+ team so you will be seeing double reports!

Captain Ani had a good ole time running half the race with Sue Pearsall before venturing out like a baby bird to finish the race!  Also not having run too many 10mile races, this was a PR for me as well!

Congrats to our open and masters teams on their podium finishes, and to our 5k racers as well!

Go orange!

Next up–Staten Island Half!

Also, a bonus treat–XC report from Captain Sue Pearsall for the Masters XC team:

Kurt Steiner XC 5k:

We had 6 master ladies represent CPTC up in Vanny for the first NYRR XC 5k race.

Registration for this race was far from perfect but everyone survived.

A great showing for the first XC race of the season!

Colleen led the women in a blazing time of 20:26and was the 4th woman to cross the line and brought home the gold in her age group. (Which BTW is her PR for this course). Her first XC race of the season. “Hills never get easier though…”  Congrats Colleen!

Judy was the next master to cross the line in 22:23 and 11th woman, 1st age group.

Not my best race at Vanny at all…but not expecting it to be coming off 2 very hard high mileage weeks (for me!).  As you say “all part of the process”!  But glad to put in the work and set a ‘benchmark’ for the season.  Great teamwork on a very humid day in the hills!  I know this is all strength and stamina that will hopefully pay off on that 3rd 200 of the 800!!

Ani was next running a 23:04 and starting her season off faster than last year and got herself a silver medal. Look out this year for her, she is going to be tearing up the race courses! :

First 5k xc race of the season! Woohoo! Wasn’t a great time, but I HAD a great time doing it, felt strong going up and down the hills until the last mile where my inner woohoo dove into lower case letters. Looking forward to a great season!

Also racing was Julie Tucker who ran a 24:38 and placed 3rd in her age group; Judith Tripp who ran 31:40 and placed 1st in her age group and Mary Rosado who was 2nd in her age group and ran a 36:01.

Congrats everyone! Well done ladies!

From Sylvie Kimche of the 50+ & 60+:

Photo: Nigel Francis

On a beautiful crisp Sunday morning, after some confusion and anguish (and late start) due the change of course and change of location of the baggage check this year, our terrific ladies W50+ & W60+ took to the streets of the Bronx – mostly the Grand Concourse – on a gently rolling hill course. The W50+ team consisting of Judy Stobbe, Wanda Wang and Sue Pearsall took 3rd place and the golden ladies team with Sylvie Kimché, Barbara Byrne & Barbara Fratta got 2nd place team.

W50+

Judy Stobbe was first for the team (as has been her habit since turning 50 a little more than a year ago) and 4th in her age group in 1:11:30, a 7:09 pace. You have to remember that Judy is an 800m specialist on the track, so a 10 mile race is definitely pushing the boundaries for her….

In her own words:

I raced Bronx as a ‘hard long run’. Always great to be around my CPTC team-mates for encouragement and motivation. Happy to report a 1:11:30 (7:09 pace) which is my 10 mile PR. I’m definitely a ‘middle distance girl’, so this was a great effort for me without completely dying! Great job to the master’s ladies, as we showed up WELL!!

FYI, Judy double-dipped (again) as 3rd for the W40+ team and help them to a 2nd place. So double-kuddos to Judy!!!

The always steady Wanda Wang was 2nd for the team in 1:18:23, a 7:51 pace. Wanda finished very strong as she ran negative splits 40:22 / 38:01.

Sue Pearsall completed the team in 1:21:39, an 8:10 pace.

It was great to see them all after the race. Congrats to them all!

W60+

Sylvie Kimché and Barbara Byrne finished with the exact same time on their watches (1:22:28), but NYRR removed 4″ from Sylvie’s time on her watch and only 2″ from Barbara’s time…

And so it is that Sylvie finished 1st for the team and 1st in her age group in 1:22:24, an 8:15 pace (and 88.11 AG%), achieving negative splits too (42:10 / 40:14).

In her own words:

I was totally untrained for this race due to family circumstances, coming back from Paris a few days earlier, physically and emotionally drained. I tried to rest for a few days and it paid off. I started very conservatively and was able to pick it up in the 2nd half, especially after the 6th mile. And of course, i loved that downhill last mile and finish!!! So, even though i ran quite a bit slower than last year, i’m elated with my result!. Thanks to Tony for the cheering and encouragements. It always give me such a boost – and a smile on my face – to hear him say “Go Baby, Go…

Barbara Byrne was 2nd for the team and 3rd in her W60-64 age group (she’s at the top of the age group now…) in 1:22:26, an 8:15 pace as well, running negative splits too 42:37 / 39:49 (she started the race in the back due to problems with finding the baggage check….?)

In her own words:

Much better weather for running, and I like the course with rolling hills.  Due to starting from the back, it was difficult to establish an even pace.  At first my focus was not on running, certainly not on racing, but on trying to let go of my aggravation. That done, outlook improved and I worked on running negative splits.  Thank you Tony at mile 7 or thereabout – I don’t know how you always manage to spot us in the crowd, but your support and encouragement is greatly appreciated and prompts a greater effort. Best part? Finding that Sylvie and I had the exact same time on our watches  (officially I was 2 sec. slower)

Barbara Fratta, always a trooper – as she ran the race with her arm in a sling – was 3rd for the team in 1:58:50, an 11:53 pace. She too ran negative splits 1:03:00 / 55:50. Thanks & congrats Barbara!

Rebecca Guenther toed the line too, always a reliable teammate to complete the team if ever needed. She ran the first half with Barbara Fratta and finished the race a few minutes behind her in 2:00:24. Thanks and congrats to Rebecca as well!

Club Team standings:

For the time being, the W50+ is ahead of Taconic RR in the NYRR Club Team race but when remove the 2 worst results, CPTC is tied with Taconic at 90.

As for the W60+, even though we’re currently leading in the points race ahead of Van Cortland TC, when we remove the 2 races, we’re actually behind 96 to 99 for VCTC.

So we all need great showing in the last 3 team races of the year: Staten Island Half on 10/9, NYCM on 11/6 and Ted Corbitt 15K on 12/10

Congrats to all the CPTC teams for their great results in the 10miler, especially the Open Women taking 1st place! WOW !!!

GO ORANGE!!!
